On takeoff for the second sortie, the bright crimson stain on Tim’s right calf approximated the size of a silver dollar. Now it covered an area the size of a pie plate. The hastily stitched wound had popped a gasket.

Sullivan would not bother about it. He’d used up all the luck any pilot could ever hope to have. He had no right to expect any more.

In combat I’ve been wounded about once every thirty minutes. Shit! At this rate, I’ll be dead in another twenty minutes flying time. With what we have to do this afternoon, my little leg wound won’t mean a thing, not a Goddamned thing, Tim reflected.

On the horizon, Tim could make out the billows of smoke rising from the burning hulks of two of the first three carriers. A few minutes at this speed and they should be able to see the Hiryu. Until today, Tim would never have guessed how quickly the fortunes of war could turn. One minute you’re down, the next you’re up, way up.
